Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Digital literacy has become a fundamental skill in the modern world, essential for education, economic participation, and communication. In rural areas like Igalamela-Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State, however, digital literacy remains a significant challenge due to limited access to technology and a lack of awareness about its importance (Jibril & Yusuf, 2023). Films, particularly educational and informational content, have the potential to bridge the gap between communities and digital knowledge by presenting complex subjects like digital literacy in an accessible and engaging manner (Abubakar & Aliyu, 2024).

Films have been used successfully as tools for educating populations on a wide range of topics, from health to environmental issues, and can be equally effective in promoting digital literacy (Oluwaseun & Salihu, 2023). In a society where traditional media such as radio and television remain popular, incorporating digital literacy content in films can captivate audiences and inspire them to embrace technology. In Igalamela-Odolu, where the adoption of digital technology is relatively slow, films can encourage individuals to explore the digital world and understand the vital role of technology in modern development (Suleiman & Ibrahim, 2023).
